Star Wars is one of the most popular movie franchises of all time, but its iconic weapon would have not been possible without rotoscoping. In 1977 rotoscoping was often used in animated films but was still not perfect and so when audiences saw Lightsabers on the big screen, they were blown away. While rotoscoping has evolved a lot since 1977, there is no denying that star wars created an amazing visual effect with the early rotoscoping technology. Rotoscoping allowed the film editors to track the coloured beam of light onto the poles used in filming; creating the Lightsaber.
