Researching my chosen Painting

Updated: Sep 29, 2021

The Painting I have chosen to base this project around is "Corridor in the asylum" by the famous Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh. This painting was painted in 1889 and was meant to depict the Psychiatric hospital of Saint-Remy-de-Provence that Van Gogh went to due to his struggles with mental health.

Van Gogh used the painting to express his surroundings to his brother Theo. He spent twelve months confined inside the asylum; continuing his painting career until his death. Shortly after creating "Corridor in the asylum" Van Gogh took his own life in 1890 as a result of his mental health. The painting uses a very bright colour palette contrasting the narrow and haunting hallways of the asylum.

References to this painting can be found all across different medias. Shots from films that have a similar aesthetic are the ending scene from 'Joker' and the red room scene from 'Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark". Themes that I may want to explore in my film based on this painting are the feelings of entrapment and torture of the mind. To branch my ideas and think of key influences for my film I created a mind map about the painting.
