"Species and Spaces and other Pieces" is a novel written by Georges Perec which explores his views on the concept of space. From reading a chapter of this book it allowed me to reflect on how I feel about space and how it effects my work.
The way Perec conveys the world around him is very intriguing and is similar to how I would like to depict the world in my final film for the Altered States Project.
Space is a very interesting concept which I could explore in film by using perspective, orientation and distortion to create a surreal aesthetic. Perec also covers the concepts of immersion and nothingness as a way of describing how we perceive the world around us.
"Ways of Seeing" by John Berger explores the way humans see the world around them through vision. From reading the first chapter I was able to change my approach to viewing images to see the hidden symbols evident behind the curtain.
I have also learnt that the way we perceive images drastically varies due to the difference in everyone's personality. I found this to link well with the ink blot pieces I have completed as I could see a completely different image from an ink blot to what others might see.
There are many factors that determine the way a person sees an image which include: Beauty, Truth, Genius, Civilization, Form, Status and Taste.
"On Photography" by Susan Sontag conveys the theme of experience the effect it has on a person. She explores how experiences can be remembered by mental images in the brain and digital images as taken by a camera.
she explains that collecting photographs is like collecting pieces of the world and treasuring them. As well this exposure to common types of images can substantially decrease the impact that they convey the the viewer. This is why I would like to explore abstract themes in my final piece.
Sontag explains a really interesting notion that photographs are a way of slicing out a moment and freezing it in time for future reflectance.
Reading a chapter of each of these books has allowed me to think much more deeply about hidden symbolism I would like to convey in my final piece.
