Plaster Casting Workshop

Updated: Feb 9, 2022

To co-inside with the memento project I attended this plaster casting workshop to create a physical model that could potentially be used for photography or 3D scanning. To start, we laid out all of the key equipment on a table. So that we could create clean casts we did a test using a leaf of a cabbage. To make the cast solidify the plaster of paris power has to be mixed well with water, poured into the mould and placed in a well ventilated area for about 24 hours.

The test cast I did of the cabbage leaf came out stunningly detailed, capturing all of the different bumps and imperfections on its surface.

So that I could create my own mould to be casted I used a block of clay which I imprinted my fingers into and added a scratched texture using the silicon clay tools. I decided to go for this design as it linked to the memento project. The fingers are a representation of identity and the scratches could symbolise memories gained from life.

After leaving my custom cast to dry overnight I carefully extracted it from the clay, ensuring none of the finer details were damaged.

I am very pleased with how my cast came out as it has a tremendous amount of detail and looks as if a hand is reaching out from a cracked surface.
