Contextual Research - 'Inception'

Inception is a science fiction film released in 2010, produced by Christopher Nolan and his wife, Emma Thomas. It won four academy awards for cinematography, best sound editing, best sound mixing and best visual effects. I find this film very influential on my work and I hope to create pieces similar to the style of Inception for this project.

The main protagonists Dom Cobb (Leonardo Di Caprio) and his accomplice Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) engage in unlawful industrial espionage by infiltrating their targets minds to extract important information. They are known as extractors. A key theme evident throughout the film is the inability to tell apart real life from a dream.

To establish if they are within another person's dream, each of the extractors carries a totem. These are a small personalised object whose behaviour is unpredictable to everyone but the totem's owner. Dom Cobb's totem is a spinning top that rotates continuously in his dream state. One of the main driving points for Cobb's character is the memories of his deceased wife Mal (Marion Cotillard) who died thinking the dream world was real.

I chose to research this film as it links perfectly with the Memento Project. An aspect of this project is exploring an artefact and the totem's in Inception are such a prominent plot point which are an artefact of Momento.
