Till Gerhard is a German artist who was born in 1917 in Hamburg. Gerhard works mainly in the field of painting, but he also has a passion for sculpting, performance and film. Gerhard creates large-scale paintings of rural areas/figures that have an unpleasant ambiance. A cabin in the woods or a skyline speckled with refineries are examples of images. He utilises fine colour spills, vigorous brushwork, as well as droplets, splatters, and smudging to create visually striking artwork.
Till Gerhard's expansive scenery of remote regions are portrayed with supernatural ferocity, alluding to a sinister degradation of paradise. His paintings are coated with a divine aura, contrasting the scene with dark imagery. He also uses blots of paint to make the illusion of glowing eyes in his humanoid figures.
I find Gerhard's work very effective with his constant confliction between a pleasant and a horror aesthetic. In terms of Altered States I could explore the divide between these two themes and how it impacts the viewer.
