Artist Research: Chris Kuchta

Chris Kuchta is a famous postmodern, horror artist from Lafayette in Indiana. He graduated at the American Academy of Art in 2000 and since then he has travelled around the globe introducing people to his artwork. In 2004 he opened the Kuchta Academy of Fine Art and illustration; where he worked, teaching young people art.

The media's he uses in his work range from pencil and acrylic paint to water-colour and charcoal. Kuchta's love for horror movies and gruesome creatures is clearly portrayed what in his art. To add even more effect to his backgrounds he will often tea-stain them to give them a vintage aesthetic. In addition to teaching, in the past he has also worked as a freelance illustrator and portrait painter. In terms of formal elements his art is very detailed and is heavily focused around the colour black and the shades of darkness. Furthermore, while his work mainly consists of horror characters from movies; Kuchta does also create portraits of history's famous horror influencers such as Edgar Alan Poe.

I chose to research Chris Kutcha because I find his work so intriguing and fascinating to look at. I very much like horror characters and so to see them represented in different scenery and lighting engages me. My favourite pieces of his are the Predator one at the top of the page and his portrait of Edgar Alan Poe. They are both drastically different pieces however I love the colours used to create the Predator and the different shades of black and brown infer the dark premise of Poe's writing.
